Installing a Level 2 EV Charger and things you should know.

  1. Do I really need a Level 2 charger for my EV?
  • Depends on your vehicle – If you plug your car in every time you get home and typically don’t drive very far, then maybe an upgrade is not necessary.
  • Most Tesla EV’s will need a Tesla EV charger.  The range on most Tesla’s is pretty significant and you don’t want to be heading on a trip and have to wait another 10+ hours for the EV to charge.
  • West Seattle Electrician takes pride in telling the truth.
  1. Will my electrical panel support an EV Charger?
  • Make sure your electrician does a load calculation on your home.  In other words, is the EV charger going to overpower my electrical panel?  Just like too many hairdryers on at the same time will pop a breaker.  An EV charger may take your entire house electrical current to the max and trip your main breaker.
  • If a load calculation is not done, you may also be paying for a costly electrical panel upgrade that is not needed. If your electrician say it is not needed then they probably don’t know how to calculate one.
  • West Seattle Electrician is trained to calculate electrical loads.
  1. Is your Electrician Licensed, Bonded, Insured and Permitted?
  • Licensed = the company is committed to having the work inspected and paying taxes.
  • Bonded = the government has made the company set money aside just in case something goes wrong.
  • Insured = if the bond doesn’t cover the damage then you have an insurance company backing the job.
  • Permitted = a third party not employed by the company will be looking over the job to make sure it is done right.
  • All of these qualities in a company will give you peace of mind as well as value to your home. If you have ever filled out a disclosure statement when selling your home, you know there is a box to check about licensed permitted work.
  • West Seattle Electrician is Licensed, Bonded, Insured and obtains EV Charger Permits.
  1. What EV Charger do I buy?
  • I would get a consultation from a West Seattle Electrician EV charger installer.
  • Electrical companies have realized it is very dangerous to install your own EV charger so they have given huge discounts to electricians to sell as well as install the EV charger.  Why pay $700 for an EV charger when you can possibly get one for a much better price from an electrician.
  • Tesla EV charger, Wallbox EV Charger, Eaton EV Charger, ChargePoint EV Charger and many more. They all have different features and some even have different connectors to your EV.
  • West Seattle Electrician has amazing suppliers who have passed on discounts to us and therefore we will pass those discounts on to you.  Even for Tesla EV chargers.
  1. HOW DOES IT LOOK?
  • Believe it or not, looks are important. Is your EV charger installed with pipe or flexible conduit? Is the wire in the wall or run on the surface? You may not think it matters but it does. When you show your friends your new Electric Vehicle are they going to see the questionable installation job or your cool new car. Some installations may cost you a little more but may give more value to your house. Don’t settle for “That should work.” Your install should look at least as good as the electric vehicle it is supporting.
  • West Seattle Electrician will only install a charger appropriate for the situation.  We have skills other electricians may not have.
  1. Where do I install the EV Charger?
  • Your garage will be the least expensive installation but it may not be practical.
  • Outside installations are very common and if installed on the outside of the house near the electrical panel it may be affordable.
  • One things to consider is the location of your electrical panel compared to where you want your EV Charger installed.  Electrical wire is expensive as well as the parts to get the wire from the electrical panel to the EV charger location.  If the panel is on the opposite side of the house you will have to go under the house, through the joists or around the outside of the house.
  • West Seattle Electrician can place the EV charger where it needs to go.
